SRINAGAR: Two members of the army were killed when an avalanche hit an army patrol in the southern Siachen glacier sector in the Union territory of Ladakh on Saturday.
A defense spokesman based in Srinagar said the army’s patrol was operating at approximately 18,000 feet in the southern Siachen Glacier when it was hit by the avalanche in the early hours of Saturday morning.
He said an Avalanche Rescue Team (ART) following the patrol was immediately in a rush and managed to locate and pull out all the members of the team. At the same time, army helicopters were put into service to rescue them, he added.
“Despite the best efforts of the medical teams, two members of the army died in the avalanche,” said the defense spokesman.
