Avalanche rally for 5-4 overtime win over Sharks – CBS San Francisco

SAN JOSE (AP) – Andre Burakovsky scored 41 seconds in overtime and the Colorado Avalanche won the race for first place in the West Division Boden by overtaking the San Jose Sharks by 5-4 on Monday night.

Martin Jones got a shot from Burakovsky, but it trickled past him into the net to the winner.

Colorado scored three times in the third period to make up two two-goal deficits, tying Nazim Kadri 3:39 before the game.

Mikko Rantanen scored his 29th goal of the season and Valeri Nichushkin and Gabriel Landeskog also scored for the Avalanche. Philipp Grubauer made 23 parades.

Colorado moved up to first place in Vegas within two points, game in hand, after the Golden Knights lost 5-6 to Minnesota.

Evander Kane scored twice and Tomas Hertl and Timo Meier also scored for San Jose. Jones made 26 saves.

The Sharks lost for the 11th time in 13 games and were officially eliminated from the playoff competition. This marks the third time in the franchise’s history that they have missed playoffs in consecutive years, including 1992 and ’93, and 1996 and ’97.

San Jose seemed to be in control after scoring two goals in the second period and taking a 3-1 lead. But Nichushkin scored early in the period to make it a one-goal game and Landeskog made it 4-3 after Meier scored for San Jose.

A rally from Brent Burns set Kadri’s decisive goal in place and Burakovsky won it in overtime.


Avalanche backup goalkeeper Devan Dubnyk was added to the COVID-19 list ahead of the game. Jonas Johansson was the substitute goalkeeper. Grubauer returned after being off the COVID-19 list for Colorado for more than two weeks last week.


The teams end the season series on Wednesday in San Jose. Colorado is 6-1 in the season streak.
