Pune police have written to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to hand over custody of Sumer Shaikh, 28, who was charged in the Cosmos Bank cyber fraud case in 2018.

Shaikh, a native of Mumbai, is one of the main suspects in the case in which several Cosmos Bank cards were cloned and funds worth £94 crore were withdrawn within a short period of time.

“We have submitted a mutual legal assistance request to the United Arab Emirates through their embassy in India to obtain his (Shaikhs) custody,” said Bhagyashree Navatake, deputy police, cybercrime and white-collar crime commissioner for the Pune police.

According to Pune Police, Shaikh was arrested in the United Arab Emirates for extortion.

Using card and banking information believed to have been stolen over the dark internet, the defendant had managed to make thousands of cash withdrawals and online transactions worthwhile £94.4 crore.

While most of the fraudulent banking transactions have been made from other countries, transactions are worth around £2.5 crore were made from different parts of India.

A case of fraud, forgery and criminal conspiracy under relevant sections of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act was registered at the Chaturshringi Police Station in August 2018.

A red corridor notice was issued against one of the main suspects in August 2020. The bank’s cash reserves had suffered a blow, affecting its credibility and safety.

IPS Commissioner Jyptipriya Singh was Deputy Cybercrime Commissioner for the Police (DCP) in Pune when the case was registered. The city of Pune has since committed two DCP cybercrimes – state police officer Sambhaji Kadam and now IPS officer Bhagyashree Navatake.
