Bitcoin was recently introduced as legal tender by El Salvador earlier this month. The world’s first step, however, was plagued by teething troubles, as an angry protest from suspicious citizens, technological glitches and a collapse in the cryptocurrency clouded the rollout.

The bold experiment got off to a bumpy start when, shortly after midnight, Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele complained that the government-backed Bitcoin app was not available on various internet platforms such as Apple and Huawei.

Bukele used his Twitter account to hit online stores to store the app or digital wallet known as Chivo, and Huawei later started making it available. However, when it turned out that the app couldn’t handle user registrations, the government disconnected it in order to connect to more servers and increase capacity.

However, when the app appeared on more platforms, Bukele retweeted videos posted on social media that afternoon of people making payments with Bitcoin at retailers in El Salvador, including McDonald’s and Starbucks. Starbucks’ El Salvador unit said it will accept bitcoin for purchases in their restaurants, drive-through facilities, or for takeout.
