Aaliyah and Damon Dash were quite a popular couple in the early 2000s, personifying the pairing of Bad Boy and Good Girl. But does anyone actually know how their love story began? Below we’ll cover how they met and a timeline of Aaliyah and Damon Dash’s relationship.

How Aaliyah and Damon Dash met
Model Natane Adcock told Vibe in 2001 that she introduced Aaliyah and Dash around July 4, 2000. She noticed that she was friends with the singer “Try Again” for a while and considered Dash to be her “best friend.”
Adcock didn’t say where she introduced them, but Aaliyah and Dash were first photographed at Diddy’s July 4th party on July 2, 2000. The Daily Mail also received photos showing how they hit it off at another party around the holiday.

In a later interview with New York Magazine, Dash recalled how Adcock set it up and called it the “coolest thing” she’d ever done for him.
“That was my first really true love,” he said of Aaliyah. “[Adcock] actually secured me the fact that I could be with the coolest girl that has ever adorned the planet. She always made sure that when I came to the club I was surrounded by the best people, all beautiful women. “
Aaliyah’s relationship with Damon Dash took off after that
Sources said Aaliyah and Dash were practically inseparable after meeting. The couple chose to keep their romance off the press, but they were together for about a year until Aaliyah and eight others tragically died in a plane crash.
Aaliyah, 22, flew back from the Bahamas on August 25, 2001, where she shot the video for “Rock the Boat” when her plane crashed shortly after takeoff. It was later found that the plane was overloaded with hundreds of pounds and the pilot had medication in his system.

Damon Dash’s life after Aaliyah
After her death, Dash Vibe revealed that he and Aaliyah had discussed getting married and planned to do so as soon as she had time.
“Like after the sequels to The Matrix,” he said, referring to her cast in The Matrix: Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. (ABC News reports that Reloaded was due for release in November 2002, but was pushed back weeks before Aaliyah’s death. Both films eventually premiered in 2003, with actress Nona Gaye playing Aaliyah.)

Years later, Dash continues to honor Aaliyah. In an interview with Page Six in 2019, he spoke openly about the singer and their relationship, saying, “She was just damn cool … we’d laugh … we never stopped hanging and that’s what happened to her. There was never an obligation or any title … just to be who he is. I didn’t fall in love with Aaliyah because of the TV – I fell in love with her because I hung out and met her. She looked different from Aaliyah on the TV screen.
Dash eventually found love again for fashion designer Rachel Roy, but they divorced in 2009 after four years of marriage. He now sees a woman named Raquel Horn – someone he once said gives him the same feelings that he felt during his relationship with Aaliyah.
