Learn from local bitcoin communities

The idea of Bitcoin as a network and technology is global, networked and expansive. As the price of Bitcoin has continued to rise, the scope and scale of what is happening around the world is also increasing.

While Bitcoin is a macro-scale phenomenon that will have far-reaching economic and historical ramifications, we shouldn’t forget to pay attention to the use of technology at the community level.

On April 24th, OC Bitcoin (also known as Orange County Bitcoin) in Newport Beach, California is hosting a Bitcoin payments launch party for Nexx Burger, a gourmet burger restaurant. The Strike and Bitcoin Is sponsored event with music by Bitrefill is an example of Bitcoin’s growing reach at the local level and its potential impact.

OC Bitcoin has been one of the most consistent and impactful arrangers of Bitcoin community meetups. I was lucky enough to speak to some of the people who arranged this event and they gave me a fantastic insight into the various aspects of the Bitcoin locality.

First off, Dimitrios Politis, CEO of Nexx Burgers, commented on why he accepts Bitcoin in his company:

How did you first hear about Bitcoin and what was your impression of it?

“Sometime in December 2017, I was introduced to Bitcoin for the first time by a good friend. He explained what Bitcoin was designed for and how it worked. Bitcoin got me interested and I saw how it could become a futuristic digital currency. I started really digging into Bitcoin in March last year and have been studying ever since. “

When did you decide that Bitcoin was right for your business?

“I’ve decided that Bitcoin will be good for Nexx Burger this February. Nexx Burger can now test and improve Bitcoin before it becomes fully mainstream. “

What is your experience in the Bitcoin community so far?

“The Bitcoin community was great. Brian from the Orange County Bitcoin Network was a huge help in helping me learn more about Bitcoin. “

OC Bitcoin’s Chief Organizer Brian Harrington commented on how local gatherings of like-minded people spread ideas and practices and motivate business leaders to make real change:

“This has happened to us several times at Orange County Bitcoin Network. We get business owners to join the meetups and want to know how to implement Bitcoin payments in their branches. We love it and are always happy to help. The circular economy of Bitcoin is growing in Orange County and we couldn’t be more excited. “

The local growth and use of Bitcoin are of the utmost importance to the adoption of Bitcoin at the macro level. In fact, Bitcoin started out as a small network used by cypherpunks who subscribed to an email list. These small interactions formed the basis for the change in the Earth’s displacement and show that the network must continue to be expanded.

If Bitcoin is to be accepted worldwide, the focus must be on transforming the microeconomics that surround us. George Mekhail of Bitcoin Is, an advocacy and intelligence agency for the Bitcoin circular economy, spoke to us about what this looks like.

How long have you been working in the Bitcoin industry and what do you define as your role in the Bitcoin field?

“I’ve been with Bitcoin since 2017. I am very passionate about helping the development of bitcoin communities, making the moral case for bitcoin, and encouraging people to get out of the corrupt fiat economy. I am also a co-author of Thank God for Bitcoin: The Creation, Corruption, and Salvation of Money. “

What inspired you to start Bitcoin Is?

“In September 2019 Russell Okung and I were looking for the best ways to get in touch with Bitcoiners. We decided to put together a last minute event in LA that would focus on helping newbies get to know the best voices in the room. Bitcoin Is is now working with a handful of Bitcoin startups, providing resources to get started, and consulting with meetups across the country. “

Bitcoin Is trains people to join the “Bitcoin Circular Economy”. Can you explain what that is?

“The bitcoin circular economy is the economy that exists outside of the old fiat system. It’s a new paradigm that encourages people to keep their hard-earned cash in sats and encourages vendors to accept BTC as a form of payment. “

And why is that important?

“If enough people adopt this mindset, society can move on to solid money, which will dramatically change the economy. In a circular Bitcoin economy, with increasing savings and purchasing power, goods and services will become more affordable than the current paradigm of rescue packages and stimulus packages that weaken our currency. “

The continuing mission of empowering business owners through the circular Bitcoin economy is one that is clearly well underway in Southern California. It is the responsibility of Bitcoin advocates to promote and express a clear desire for continued expansion of access to Bitcoin payment services in local economies. The Newport Beach event is just one example of the success local Bitcoin meetups can have – previous meetings made one company accept Bitcoin, and perhaps more companies will now try to copy the successful use of the technology.

Everyone in the Southern California area is encouraged to visit the OC Bitcoin Network and attend the launch of Bitcoin payments at Nexx Burger in Newport Beach on April 24th from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Immersing yourself in a local Bitcoin community is a practice that expands the conversation about Bitcoin and is of great benefit to both the network and the local economy.
