SecuX Hardware Wallet Review for secure crypto storage

As bitcoin prices rose, so did the number of bitcoin-related crimes. According to CipherTrace, a company specializing in blockchain analytics and cryptocurrency intelligence, major crypto thefts, hacks and frauds rose from $ 4.5 billion in 2019 to nearly $ 400 million a year.

Storing your valuable assets online can be very risky as many of these thefts and hacks happen in online exchanges and software wallets. That said, if you had money in an online wallet or exchange, there is a high chance that hackers will steal it without your knowledge. If you store your crypto assets on your PC and your computer contains a virus or Trojan, hackers could steal your money in no time.

To better protect their valuable assets, users use a device called hardware wallets or cold wallets. A hardware wallet has its advantages and disadvantages compared to a software wallet. A hardware wallet is essential for the security of your cryptocurrencies as it is only connected to the internet during one transaction. That being said, the wallet is in a constant state of disconnection, both incoming and outgoing, and there is basically no risk of your private key being hacked. The downside is that since the wallet is a physical wallet, you will need to find a place to keep or carry it.

A good hardware wallet is very difficult to come by. Some of the hardware wallets I used to have had tiny screens about the size of a peanut and only allowed me to add 3 crypto accounts. In my search for a good hardware wallet, I came across a company called SecuX based in Taiwan. According to their website, SecuX Technology Inc. is a blockchain security company dedicated to developing comprehensive solutions to protect people’s precious digital assets through blockchain technology. With strong supply chain management and flexible design options, they also offer bespoke products for a wide variety of digital asset management applications. SecuX was founded in 2018 and currently offers 3 models of hardware wallets: W10, W20 and the robust, heavy V20. All three models have a large 2.8-inch color touchscreen, vault-level protection, account recoverability, and support for multiple cryptocurrencies.

SecuX wallets are equipped with an Infineon SLE Solid Flash CC EAL5 + Secure Element Chip, which, according to SecuX, is used to securely store your unique PIN and private key. Such security at the vault and military level enables zero transaction leaks and exceeds that used by banking systems to protect against online attacks. Your transactions are verified without the private key ever leaving the device. SecuX wallets also use a random number pad to enter your pins in case peeping toms try to look at your pins nearby.

SecuX wallets also have a very important security feature called the hidden wallet, which uses a user-adapted passphrase to create a separate and hidden wallet. Users can store high quality cryptocurrencies in their hidden wallets and this feature is vital because if thieves get their hands on your device and PIN, they will not know about the hidden wallet.

Coin support

SecuX wallets currently also support more than 1000 different coins and tokens, including important cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Litecoin, Dash, Dogecoin, Digibyte, Bitcoin Cash, Tron, Groestlcoin, Stellar, Binance, all ERC-20 tokens, TRC -10 and TRC-20 from June 2021. SecuX also plans to support Cardano (ADA) and Binance Smart Chain (BSC) for July 2021 and many more coins in the near future.

BIP 32, BIP39 and BIP44 compliant

All SecuX wallets are fully compatible with the BIP32, BIP39 and BIP44 protocols, which means that you can restore existing wallets with standard recovery words of 12, 18 or 24. This allows you to restore any compatible wallet to the SecuX wallet or restore your SecuX wallet to any BIP32, BIP39 and BIP44 compatible software or hardware wallet if you accidentally lose your hardware wallet.

All 3 models have the functions mentioned above, and since the V20 is the flagship and high-end device and the W20 is the most popular of its line, the W10 is the little brother and entry-level wallet from SecuX. Although it lacks bluetooth capabilities and a battery, the W10 is still enough to carry out your daily cryptocurrency trading and storage. One of the great things about the W10 is its weight. The W10 weighs 49 grams, less than 2 slices of bread and is only 9 x 6 cm. With this weight and size, you can take it with you anywhere.

The big brother of the W10 is the W20 and it is the bestseller in the SecuX series. With the already impressive and robust function of a large touchscreen and the support of multiple cryptocurrencies, the W20 also has Bluetooth capability and an embedded Li-polymer battery. With the additional Bluetooth capability, you can access your crypto on your laptop or mobile devices. The option of Bluetooth connectivity also opened the door to cross-platform support and users can now connect to SecuX using Windows, Mac OS, iOS and Android mobile devices.

SecuX also has a built-in battery built into all W20s and V20s, so users can use the W20 for weeks or even months without having to charge their device. According to the SecuX website, the 600 mAh battery in the W20 and V20 enables up to 7 hours of continuous operation and at least 3 months of idle operation on a full charge.

The heavyweight and flagship of the SecuX range belongs to the V20 and I have to warn you, it has a presence that is hard to miss. The V20 is identical to the W20 in terms of specs, features, and the chip inside. With an aluminum frame, rubber base, and diamond-shaped metal frame, the V20 resembles a strong and sturdy vault. At 120 grams, it is almost three times as heavy as a W10. While heavy, the V20 is very sturdy and should be able to withstand anything you throw at it, but don’t quote me on that. The V20 also uses USB Type C, as opposed to Micro-B on the W10 and W20, which is a plus for me. For most of the smartphones on the market, with the exception of Apple iPhones that use Type C, another device that uses Type C means backup cables in case you lose the original.

• W10 and W20 are light and easy to transport

• Easy to use with step-by-step instructions

• Definitely safe

• Cross-platform support and Bluetooth capability

• Over 1000 supported coins and tokens and up to 500 accounts per wallet

• Support for Cardano ADA, Binance Smart Chain BSC and WalletConnect is planned for July 2021.

• V20 are a bit heavy and big

• Do you need firmware updates from time to time

• No phone support

• From June 2021, only supports major coins / tokens.
