Snowboarders who caused avalanches over I-70 may have to pay $ 168,000

When Evan Hannibal, a Vail resident, submitted his GoPro footage to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center in March, he said he didn’t expect his comments on the video would help initiate a lawsuit against him that resulted in a reckless exposure fee and one possible refund of $ 168,000.

Hannibal was snowboarding with Summit County resident Tyler DeWitt on the west side of the watershed in the White River National Forest above the Eisenhower Tunnel on March 25.

DeWitt said when they got to the area they wanted to drive in, he tried to release a small disk but saw a much bigger reaction than the couple expected.
