Tate creates a menu inspired by Yayoi Kusama
Celebrate the Yayoi Kusama exhibition at Tate Modern (May 17, 2021 – June 12, 2022) with these Japanese dishes inspired by the artist’s work
To mark the recent opening of its Yayoi Kusama exhibition, Tate Modern is serving a new menu in its artist-inspired Level 6 restaurant.
While there are no dotted pumpkins on offer here, the new menu includes Japanese lunch dishes and weekend afternoon tea with colorful, bite-sized desserts and finger sandwiches with an umami touch.
Okonomiyaki with Jersey Royal potatoes and ginger-coriander pesto
We recommend reserving your place in the rooftop restaurant and enjoying a starter of okonomiyaki with Jersey Royal potatoes and ginger and coriander pesto, or biting into cheeky, roasted Cornish red chicken wings with dashi salt.
It continues with tasty delicacies such as yakitori game with roasted spring onions, ponzu and cucumber; or try the teriyaki-roasted eggplant with shimeji mushrooms and oshitashi, a dish so impressively plated it’s almost a shame to eat it.

Here at Wallpaper * we are big fans of miso-inspired desserts, so we recommend completing the meal with the rich miso chocolate mousse. The rhubarb sundae with kokuto caramel sauce is a particularly delicious treat that puts a smile on your face with its hot pink sauce and cloud-like texture.

For something lighter, experience afternoon tea like you’ve never drunk it before. Enjoy sweet treats like matcha tea scones with clotted cream and cherry and sakura compote; or hearty sandwiches such as miso roast beef with pickled mouli, wasabi and watercress. Wash it all down with some “shimmer” tea, a little red brew that smells and tastes like cherry pie and is bursting with sparkling, edible glitter.
Whichever you choose, these jaw-dropping dishes are so good you’ll see stars before stepping into Kusama’s infinity mirror. An ideal way to celebrate a day in the galleries for the first time in a long time. §
