A leading Asian digital artist named Cody Choi has a digital work of art made available as a non-fungible mark (NFT) with a price tag of 70,000 Ethereum (ETH) to highlight the specifics of the NFT market – which he claims ” is a mess. “
Choi, 60 years old and also a renowned contemporary photographer, represented South Korea at the Vienna Biennale 2017. He is currently exhibiting his work at the Art Basel Hong Kong Festival, which ends this weekend.
And here, according to Chosun, he has listed his own NFT work called Animal Totem – Stolen Data – Tiger # 00 at a breathtaking price. If he finds a buyer, his work – at current Ethereum prices – would fetch over $ 188 million, breaking the record for the most expensive digital artwork ever sold.
However, Choi said he wanted to comment on the state of the NFT sector, stating:
“I wanted to satirize the art world [and its relationship with] NFTs by giving it an absurd price. “
Choi stated that the NFT craze had hurt digital art and deplored the fact that the works now referred to as “NFT art” only use “techniques to scan a real” [artwork] and transferring to a computer ”or alternatively“ drawing with digital pens ”.
He continued:
“No matter how you look [NFT art]As digital art, it doesn’t make sense. Even though the sector is so mixed up, the amount of money continues to grow. “
And Choi warned that the NFT craze had the potential to hurt the art world in the long term, asking, “If this situation continues to develop, what will the future of young artists look like?”
Choi’s comments come weeks after British painter David Hockney, now 83, dismissed NFTs as the work of “international crooks”.
Hockney asked, “What is that? [buyers] have? I do not really know. “
Hockney, who spoke on the “Adventures in the Art of Waldy and Bendy” podcast in April, also targeted the $ 69 million record-breaking NFT work by artist Beeple.
“I saw the pictures, but I mean, it just looked like stupid little things.”
In March, British comedian John Cleese also tried to mock the NFT world by painting a picture of the Brooklyn Bridge, claiming his “alter ego” had a “bridge for sale” to gullible buyers.
The piece was ultimately sold for just under 18 ETH.
