Cryptocurrency is growing rapidly and this month alone we saw the sale of NVIDIA CMP mining cards worth $ 30 million to Hut 8 Mining Corp. and seen the seizure of 300 stolen NVIDIA CMP 30HX cryptocurrency mining cards. Now Bitmain has just teased miner Antminer E9 Ethereum, which has a hash rate of 3 GH / s.
Could the Antminer E9 ASIC Cryptocurrency Miner be the solution to the GPU shortage? – Unlikely, but still possible if the stars line up on Bitmain
The Bitmain Antminer E9 is an ASIC miner for Ethereum and reportedly provides a hash rate of up to 3 GH / s in Ethereum mining. That’s the equivalent of 25 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 (120 MH / s per 3090) or 32 RTX 3080 (94 MH / s per 3080). In terms of currently available NVIDIA mining cards, the Antminer E9 is equivalent to 115 CMP 30HX (26 MH / s per 30HX). The Antimer E9 will also consume a lot of power at 2,556 W, but has an efficiency of 0.85 J / M. With that much electricity, the Antiminer E9 could earn around US $ 236 per day, with electricity costs of US $ 0.13. Dollars per kWh (average US electricity cost).
If the claim for a hash rate of 3 GH / s is true, the Antminer E9 is the most powerful ASIC cryptocurrency miner on the market. It would be the Linzhi Phoenix Miner which has a hash rate of 2.6 GH / s. The Linzhi Phoenix is also less energy efficient at 3000 W. This makes the Antminer E9 15.3% faster in mining and 14.8% more efficient. This ASIC miner certainly isn’t going to be cheap, and rumors are that the Antminer E9 will sell for over $ 20,000. Some even speculate it could go as high as $ 30,000. For comparison, the Linzhi Phoenix falls in the price range of $ 11,300 to $ 13,700.

If the price of the Antminer E9 is between $ 20,000 and $ 30,000, the breakeven point drops between 85 and 127 days. It’s certainly a much better investment than 25 RTX 3090, which would cost around $ 75,000 in the resale market, which at best takes 311 days to break even, assuming electricity is cheap and the value of Ethereum stays the same . With that in mind, the Antminer E9 appears to be an extremely attractive purchase for a cryptocurrency miner.
Could this be the solution to the graphics card shortage? The answer could be either yes or no. If Bitmain manages to produce the Antminer E9 in large enough quantities, this could certainly be a big part of the solution to the graphics card shortage. Instead of graphics cards falling into the hands of cryptocurrency miners, miners will be busy with the ASIC miner and consumers can finally get their hands on the latest graphics cards. More realistically, Bitmain will most likely not be able to produce the Antminer E9 in sufficient quantities due to the global semiconductor shortage.
The Bitmain Antminer E9 ASIC Cryptocurrency Miner is sure to compete with NVIDIA’s CMP series of Cryptocurrency Mining Cards. However, it is unlikely that much of the market share will be taken out as it is unreasonable to expect it to be produced in large quantities. Unfortunately for the consumer, the graphics card shortage lingers unless the stars align with Bitmain.
