IOHK’s “Africa Strategy” aims to promote the acceptance of Cardano in Africa for everyday people and businesses. Emurgo IOHK, the official trading arm of Cardano, highlighted in a recent statement the two goals they want to achieve:
“The first goal is to work with local stakeholders to create projects that solve real problems in the market. The second goal is to train and educate local developers to find solutions to local problems. “
There has been talk of Cardano signing a deal with the African government for some time, and things became apparent when Charles Hoskinson, founder of IOHK, tweeted something cryptic about February as a “really good month”.
Things shaped and became concrete when Ethiopia claimed that its government would use Cardano’s blockchain to change the way services were purchased. IOHK’s product agent, Dynal Patel, expressed how “identities” were taken for granted in developed markets, even though that was the core of access to a variety of services. He said,
“Cardano is an open platform that seeks to provide billions of people who lack economic identity by enabling decentralized applications for identity, value and governance.”
Talking about the deal, Hoskinson said:
“This is a big deal. That will grow over time and this is the first country to do something like this. It didn’t happen in the US, it didn’t happen in Germany. In Ethiopia of all places, this was huge news for the introduction of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. “
Pointing out that IOHK was “very excited” to work with the Ethiopian Minister of Education to develop a next-generation blockchain-based identity solution, Patel said that students’ grades and educational level are on the Cardano blockchain throughout their educational life anchored by creating a unique digital identity.
The next phase would focus on “expanding national ID programs” which would allow financial institutions to also record transactions where local banks and micro-credit institutions can screen citizens and provide services.
After the Ethiopian contract, IOHK also signed its second partnership agreement with World Mobile, the first blockchain-based cellular network, to build a scalable infrastructure in Tanzania. The project focuses on providing mobile internet access.
Charles Hoskinson expects Africa to adapt to blockchain technology faster than any other nation. Hoskinson highlighted the strategic importance of Africa, saying:
“In the next five to ten years, all of the governance tools, how they tune how the property books work, how payment systems work, how identity systems work, how supply chain systems work, etc., etc., will be updated . “
Hoskinson concluded that these projects were commercial in nature but had a social cause. He affirmed that they would succeed, although the likelihood of failure hampered them to some extent.
